“NYC Duo Confesses to Money Laundering in Bitfinex Bitcoin Heist”

    bunee 04 Aug 2023

    **Key Points:**

    – A New York City couple, Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan, have confessed to money laundering charges related to the 2016 Bitfinex hack.
    – The hacking event led to the theft of roughly 120,000 bitcoins.
    – The duo was apprehended in February 2022, over a year post-seizure of an estimated 95,000 of the stolen bitcoins.

A Coders’ Duo Caught in the Crypto-Web

Ilya Lichtenstein, 35, and Heather Morgan, 33, a married couple from the Big Apple, have admitted being on the wrong side of the digital law. They pleaded guilty to money laundering charges tied to the 2016 Bitfinex hack. Given they’re tech folks, you could say they found the shortcut to the dark side of the code.

Booty Bonanza – The Bitfinex Bitcoin Burglary

In a plot worthy of a cyber-thriller movie, this duo was linked to one of the biggest cryptocurrency heists in history – the Bitfinex hack of 2016. About 120,000 bitcoins were stolen, and at today’s value, that’s not digital chump change, it’s a hefty sum. Talk about having too many bitcoins in one byte!

    The Law Bytes Back

The legal machine got rolling more than a year after 95,000 of those stolen bitcoins were seized. In the ultimate plot twist, Lichtenstein and Morgan were arrested in February 2022. They didn’t get to enjoy their coin cache for too long. Their digital treasure trove was raided, and the authorities made sure they got their crypto comeuppance.

    Summing-It-Up

A New York couple, Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan, have shockingly admitted to being in cahoots with the infamous 2016 Bitfinex hack, and confessed to charges of money laundering. Roughly 120,000 bitcoins were pilfered during the hack. However, it was after the authorities seized nearly 95,000 of those stolen bitcoins that the two were apprehended. In simpler terms, let’s just say the couple bit off more bitcoins than they could chew, and the law chewed them right back.
