Remember when you borrowed your office pen and accidentally took it home? Well, Jareh Sebastian Dalke, a 31-year-old former NSA employee, apparently wanted to take more than just stationary goodies. This chap served as an Information Systems Security Designer for the prestigious U.S. National Security Agency (NSA), with a shiny Top Secret clearance, no less, from June 6, 2022, to July 1, 2022. But recently, Dalke has been caught in a bit of a pickle, pleading guilty to allegations that he attempted to send classified defense information to Russia.
Having top-secret clearance might make one feel like a protagonist in a Tom Clancy novel, but in Dalke’s case, it seems it was more of a temptation than an honor. The exact nature of the information Dalke supposedly tried to ship eastwards isn’t revealed yet, but one thing is clear: It was classified and it was defense-related. And if there’s anything we’ve learned from watching spy movies, it’s that these two words latch themselves onto pretty significant stuff.
Former NSA employee, and evidently not the best secret keeper, Jareh Sebastian Dalke, has pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to send classified defense-related information to Russia. Dalke had Top Secret clearance during his brief employment at the NSA from June 6 to July 1, 2022, which unfortunately was more like a “license to spill” than a “license to kill”.
As humans, we all make mistakes. Prized for our ability to learn and grow from them, it’s important to remember not all mistakes have the same gravity. Leaving your coffee on the roof of your car is one thing; attempt to share secret doodles with foreign countries is a whole different kettle of fish.
