Meta played a game of whack-a-mole and bashed two of the largest covert influence operations in the world on the head. Let’s just say, they didn’t see that coming! The operations, which originated from our tech neighbors, China and Russia, got the ‘404 not found’ message courtesy Meta. Thousands of rogue accounts and web pages that tried to manipulate public opinion through misinformation were given an internet timeout. Talk about digital housecleaning!
When it comes to the scope of this operation, it wasn’t just confined to a single website or app. It was way bigger. We’re talking over 50 apps here including big boys like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Reddit-and even that old friend you forgot about, Pinterest. Don’t forget the underdogs like Medium, Blogspot, and VKontakte. The operation was so sprawling that it involved dozens of smaller platforms and (now former) problem child—X (formerly Twitter). It really was like Meta had its very own John Wick moment.
In a move that could be likened to cleaning your device cache (times a thousand), Meta intervened and took down two of the largest known covert influence operations in the world. Originating from Russia and China, these operations targeted more than 50 apps, including many well-known platforms. Thousands of nefarious accounts and pages found themselves blocked across the board, leading us to salute Meta’s impressive cyber-scrubbing session.
So the next time someone says that tech companies don’t do enough to keep our digital realm safe, remind them of this. Better yet, get them to clean their device’s cache while they’re at it. You know, just for good measure.
