The vast digital ocean isn’t always serene. Recently, some cyber waves have been traced back to Gaza. These aren’t just any waves; they’re virtual tsunamis targeted towards organizations in the energy, defense, and telecommunications sectors in Israel. Guess you could say these attackers are giving a whole new meaning to the phrase “surfing the net”.
Putting on its digital lifeguard cap, Microsoft has spotted these waves and tried to get a handle on them. In its fourth Digital Defense Report, the tech giant named this cyberattack campaign ‘Storm-1133’. The name might sound like a rejected Star Wars character, but apparently, this isn’t the droid you’re looking for if you’re an Israeli enterprise.
Connecting the digital dots, we find that the ‘Storm-1133’ group seems to be playing for Team Hamas, a Sunni militant group. Now, if only they’d use their powers of disruption for something more constructive, like a virtual game of “King of the Hill”.
In a nutshell, or more specifically, a digital nutshell, a cloud of a cyber threat is looming over Israeli industries from an unexpected quarter – Gaza. Traced and tracked by Microsoft, this series of cyber attacks are labelled ‘Storm-1133’. Make no mistake, this Storm isn’t just blowing hot air. It seems geared towards advancing the agendas of the Sunni militant group, Hamas. That’s one way to try and ‘click’ with an audience – when you can’t beat them, hack them.
