• Alexey Bilyuchenko, 43, and Aleksandr Verner, 29, have been charged with conspiring to launder 647,000 stolen bitcoins from the now-defunct cryptocurrency exchange, Mt. Gox.
• The hackers were part of a notorious Russian hacking group called Fancy Bear.
• The stolen bitcoins had an estimated value of $16 billion at the time of the heist, making it the biggest cryptocurrency exchange theft in history.
The U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) has charged two members of an infamous Russian hacking group, Fancy Bear, in connection with the 2014 Mt. Gox cryptocurrency exchange hack. The stolen bitcoins had an estimated worth of $16 billion at the time of the heist, and the hackers have been charged with conspiring to launder approximately 647,000 stolen bitcoins.
Bilyuchenko and Verner have been added to the list of seven other suspects already charged in the Mt. Gox hack. The investigation has been ongoing for several years and has led to the extradition of some hackers to the U.S.
The Mt. Gox hack was the biggest theft in the history of cryptocurrency exchanges. Mt. Gox was forced to file for bankruptcy after the hack and has since resigned.
