The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is not one to keep quiet when it spies some sanctions shenanigans. Last Thursday, they dropped the sanction hammer on Kimsuky, a North Korean adversarial tech collective. This tech group made the naughty list for allegedly helping the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) dodge sanctions. DPRK must’ve thought it had its own cyber Avengers, but it turns out, crime doesn’t pay—even in the digital world.
Eight foreign-based agents are also rubbing their cyber wounds. The U.S. Department of the Treasury alleges these clever invisibles aided in generating revenue and intercepting missile-related technology for our friends over at DPRK. Forget about angry birds, we’re talking about serious missile technology here! Unfortunately for them, the Treasury Department doesn’t think highly of clandestine activities—especially when it involves North Korea.
Essentially, the OFAC has handed out a round of sanctions to Kimsuky, North Korea’s own tech league of villains, alongside eight foreign agents for aiding the DPRK in sanctions evasion and missile tech procurement. The Treasury Department might just have coined a new superhero maxim: “Not on our servers!” Too bad the violators couldn’t CTRL+Z their actions.
